The flow of life

Contact with nature, the wind and the sea and the constant wave of emotions that keep flowing, forms the basis for the work of Erwin Smit, owner of Opsetims making exclusive children’s furniture. A base that he found on Ibiza, the island where he’s been for fifteen years, but just as well in his hometown Huisduinen. A special man who draws inspiration from unusual items.

“For as long as I can remember, I collect materials I here and there encounter; on my way to school, on the road towards the harbor, beach or forest … all I encounter along the way, inspired me.” Erwin comes from a family of hunters and fishermen. “Maybe it is about that where my fascination of materials from nature comes from. We were, after all, literally and figuratively at the mercy of nature. Not only for materials but also for our food.

The child in me
This passion for materials and nature remained around him and still plays a constant in his life. “The same applies to the child in me, which I never really lost.” Something what gave him the inspiration to make children’s furniture about 25 years ago . “Initially, purely for my own children. There was then hardly something nice in the market for sale, so I decided just to make some furniture of materials I had collected over the years. “Besides that it was not limited in making children’s furniture, it also includes tables, cabinets and many other pieces of furniture which were designed and made by Erwin.

The trend for
“At sea or while hunting I had my inspirations; back then I was working as a fisherman on the North Sea and I hunted regularly. A great and relaxed time where I just lived in the moment and enjoying it to

the fullest. Materials were there plentiful and I also gathered it in abundance. Nowadays everything has to look old and undiminished, but at that time I was really before that trend. ”
Inspiration
Also on Ibiza, where Erwin was regularly found, the search for useful materials went undisturbed on. “For instant I was looking with my children for beautiful shells cut by sand from the beach Niu Blau. Ultimately these shells were processed into the children’s bed of our youngest daughter, Deirdre. ”

But also on other aspects of the island has warm memories for Erwin. “Benirras, with its perfect coffee, burgers and drum evenings during sunset, the sea, the beach, the water, the warm evenings, the beautiful spots and casual atmosphere. But I cherish certainly warm feelings for the inland where you find delicious organic markets,

the old city of Eivissa with its rich pirate history, Es Vedra … I believe Ibiza gives the spiritual mind space for development and this island, where water always flows, the beach and emotions, will certainly serve as an inspiration for those who visit the island. ”

Opsetims
The same flow Erwin does experience in his hometown Huisduinen where he has found his own place by the sea. “A place where continuously new designs were created in my studio thanks to this flow.” Designs that have now become a complete line of furniture for his own company Opsetims.

“And still the ideas keep coming and I keep me busy to develop, but less than before. The gift and inspirations then streamed in seem a little bit faded, but nevertheless I am very satisfied.” And he should be, because the children’s furniture designed by Erwin are now sold all over the globe; directly and through dealers. An achievement to be proud of.

Erwin’s family still comes regularly on Ibiza. “My former girlfriend, Desiree, and daughter Deidre go there at least twice a year and every time our daughter comes back with stories about searching for shells at Niu Blau. Much has changed, but it remains a great island …
